Our Message as Democrats
"We can do better and we will. We're the optimists. For us, this is a country of the future. We're the can do people. And let's not forget what we did in the 1990s. We balanced the budget. We paid down the debt. We created 23 million new jobs. We lifted millions out of poverty and we lifted the standard of living for the middle class. We just need to believe in ourselves -- and we can do it again." - John Kerry
The 2006 elections, in which Democrats retook the Senate and House, are over now. As Democrats, let us keep in mind that many of those who voted for us did so because they were dissatisfied with what was happening. They were particularly distressed by the lack of accountability in our elected representatives and by their inability to work together across party lines. It will be a goal of the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee to do as much as possible at the grass roots level to be a force for openness and cooperation, and a voice for the concerns of rural America.
Upcoming Events
Apr 10 - Culpeper County Democratic Committee Jefferson Jackson Dinner. Guest Speaker: Howard Dean. 5:30, Culpeper Country Club, $75.
Apr 19 - Rappahannock County Democratic Caucus (noon). Three delegates and one alternate will be selected to represent Rappahannock County at the District and State conventions. Based on the results of the primary election in the County, two of the delegates must be pledged to Sen. Obama, one must be pledged to Sen. Clinton, and the alternate must be pledged to Sen. Obama.
May 10 - 7th District Convention in Richmond.
May 10 - Spring Fund Raiser. This year, Committee Member Tom Pellikaan opens his house for our annual spring fund raiser and political awareness day. Tom is retired after a lifetime working in the Congress, and his home is a veritable cornucopia of political memorabilia. The house itself was on the Rappahannock Tour. Plan to join us from 5:30pm to 8:00pm for a sunset BBQ picnic dinner, dessert and wine at Red Oak Mountain. A wonderful opportunity to mingle with your neighbors and friends.
May 17-18 - Annual Relay for Life. Join us at our tent on the circle.
Jun 07 - Virginia State Convention in Hampton.
Jun 10 - CONGRESSIONAL PRIMARY ELECTION. Don't forget to vote!
Aug 23 - Annual Rappahannock County Democratic Yard Sale, at the Rappahannock Community Center (the old Sperryville School House). Last year, a solid cherry desk in great condition sold for $50, and the webmaster walked away with a perfectly functioning electric leaf blower for $1. Great stuff, super prices, good cause.
Warner to Run for U.S. Senate
We are excited that former Governor Mark Warner has decided to enter the 2008 race for U.S. Senate. A popular figure, Warner was noted for eliminating the immense budget deficit left by outgoing Governor Gilmore, and for working in a bipartisan fashion with Democrats and Republicans in the Virginia House and Senate. We will pleased to support Governor Warner in his bid for the Senate. You can learn more about his candidacy on his website, or you can view his video on YouTube.
